Scalp Micropigmentation goes by many names: SMP, scalp tattoo, hair tattoo, and hair pigmentation. They’re all the same! There are, however, some other procedures out there that you may confuse with SMP. These include standard tattoos, microblading, microneedling, and laser treatment. A closer look, however, will reveal great differences, and highlight why SMP is such a great treatment for hair loss.
Unless you’re trained in performing both SMP and regular tattoos you’re not going to be able to simply switch between one type of procedure and the another. To begin with, SMP uses a specific type of equipment and ink. SMP pigment is expressly created to not discolor like regular tattoo ink. Scalp micropigmentation also doesn’t go as far into the skin as a regular tattoo and the SMP pigment expands differently in the skin. Finally, the technique for scalp micropigmentation is very different than traditional tattoos. Scalp micropigmentation uses pointillism or a dotting technique, where traditional tattoos is more of a scraping method
